What is the role of art in the world?

Posted on Jul 1st, 2008 by Mila : love Mila
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 01, 2008:

For me everything is in essence art.  So art's role is connection, to our senses and to our spirit, to awaken and transform our consciousness.

What is the difference between knowledge and wisdom?

Posted on Jul 2nd, 2008 by Mila : love Mila
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 02, 2008:

Knowledge comes from the outside, wisdom from within.  We 'know' knowledge through our reasoning and our own and others'  experiences, but we 'feel' wisdom when it strikes us like a lightning bolt, or a sudden awakening. Everyone has access to her/his inner wisdom but sometimes it gets blocked by clattered thoughts, worries and anxieties, the egoistic self, dwelling in the past, etc. I believe we are born wise but often 'education' intervenes and veer us away from our natural inborn wisdom towards the mere acquisition of knowledge.  But there comes a realization sooner or later that the more we know, the less we actually know and we get pulled back within to realise deep divine wisdom.

Two Choices

Posted on Jul 3rd, 2008 by Mila : love Mila
What would you do?. You make the choice. Don't look for a punch line, there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the same choice?

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: "When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?"

The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued. "I believe that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child."

Then he told the following story:

Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, "Do you think they'll let me play?" Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, "We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning."

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. His Father watched with a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.

Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, "Shay, run to first! Run to first!" Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, "Run to second, run to second!" Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball . The smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, "Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay"

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, "Run to third! Shay, run to third!"

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, "Shay, run home! Run home!" Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team.

"That day", said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, "the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world".

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

Now or Never for Zimbabwe! (an appeal from AVAAZ)

Posted on Jul 3rd, 2008 by Mila : love Mila
Here's an opportunity to take a stand for the people of Zimbabwe so it need not become another Burma.

Dear Friends,

Mugabe has seized the Presidency of Zimbabwe in a sham election. We urgently need our governments to refuse to recognize him this week. Click below to send a message to your head of state:

After a violence-ridden, sham 'election' last Friday, Robert Mugabe has declared himself President of Zimbabwe. Ominous reports of a massive crackdown on all his opponents are circulating. The fate of the country now hangs on negotiations between Mugabe and the legitimate winner of the first round election -- Morgan Tsvangirai.

If governments around the world refuse to recognize Mugabe, and strongly push other governments to do the same, his position will be weakened, and he could be pressured into agreeing to a deal with Tsvangirai that reflects the will of the Zimbabwean people. There's still hope to save Zimbabwe, but every day of silence strengthens Mugabe's position.

So far only a few governments have refused to recognize Mugabe as President -- we urgently need to turn this trickle into a flood, this week. Click below to send a personalized message directly to your head of state or foreign minister, and forward this email to others who could help:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/zimbabwe_chance_for_peace/7.php?cl=104469649

The people of Zimbabwe are desperate for change. The country has been decimated by Mugabe, with 80% unemployment, 160,000% inflation, and rampant fear -- over 30% of the population has fled the country.

The people of Zimbabwe clearly voted for Tsvangirai over Mugabe in the first round of the election, which was more free of violence. Then Mugabe's party waged a campaign of terror and intimidation and Tsvangirai was forced to withdraw after almost 100 of his party activists were murdered. The UN Secretary General and election observers from the African Union and Southern Africa Development Community have condemned the run off election as illegitimate, and the African Union has called for negotiations.

There is now only one path away from the violence -- a negotiated agreement. If leaders from Brazil to Botswana and Indonesia to India reject the regime, there is a chance of an agreement that reflects the will of the people. We have to act fast, it's now or never for Zimbabwe. Send your message now and spread the word:

When is competition valuable?

Posted on Jul 3rd, 2008 by Mila : love Mila
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 03, 2008:

I think the answer is in the question itself.  When competition adds value to the betterment of  humanity, then it becomes valuable.  When it turns ruthless, serving only the vested interest of a few and further promoting greed instead of love for humanity, then it becomes otherwise. Am I competitive? Yes, for as long as I can remember, whether in studies or at play, in illness or whatever, I had that strong urge to win and excel.  While before it was competition with myself and others, now it's a competition challenging just myself to keep on growing and evolving spiritually.

Rich vs. Poor

Posted on Jul 5th, 2008 by Mila : love Mila

Got this as an e-mail forward and sharing with you all!

One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live.

They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?"

"It was great, Dad."

"Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked.

"Oh yeah," said the son.

"So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father.

The son answered:

"I saw that we have one dog and they had four.

We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end.

We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.

Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.

We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.

We buy our food, but they grow theirs.

We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them."

The boy's father was speechless.

Then his son added, "Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are."

Isn't perspective a wonderful thing?  Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don't have.

Appreciate every single thing you have, especially your friends!

Pass this on to friends and acquaintances and help them refresh their perspective and appreciation.

"Life is too short and friends are too few."

Keep the smile alive.

How would you respond to those who feel overwhelmed by bad news?

Posted on Jul 7th, 2008 by Mila : love Mila
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 07, 2008:

I haven't the faintest clue what to say, so I think I will just smile (to spread some hope and positive energy) and keep still and calm, then observe and listen to their feelings. I suppose they need the space to express themselves as they wish, and if they decide to speak and ask me some questions, that's when I will respond from my heart. I hope they don't ask too difficult questions like my son does - he, he, he!

Lessons of the Square Watermelon

Posted on Jul 7th, 2008 by Mila : love Mila

This is good.  Passed on by a friend.

Lessons of the Square Watermelon

One of my best friends passed along a story that is a great reminder of the power of creativity and innovation. The story revolves around the growing of square watermelons in Japan (a confirmed true story from Snopes). Below is the email he passed along:

Japanese grocery stores had a problem. They are much smaller than their US counterparts and therefore don’t have room to waste. Watermelons, big and round, wasted a lot of space. Most people would simply tell the grocery stores that watermelons grow round and there is nothing that can be done about it. But some Japanese farmers took a different approach. ”If the supermarkets want a space efficient watermelon,” they asked themselves, “How can we provide one?” It wasn’t long before they invented the square watermelon.

The solution to the problem of round watermelons wasn’t nearly as difficult to solve for those who didn’t assume the problem was impossible to begin with and simply asked how it could be done. It turns out that all you need to do is place them into a square box when they are growing and the watermelon will take on the shape of the box.

This made the grocery stores happy and had the added benefit that it was much easier and cost effective to ship the watermelons. Consumers also loved them because they took less space in their refrigerators which are much smaller than those in the US - which resulted in the growers being able to charge a premium price for them.

What does this have do with anything besides square watermelons? There are a five lessons that you can take away from this story which will help you in all parts of your life. Here are a few of them:

1.) Don’t Assume: The major problem was that most people had always seen round watermelons so they automatically assumed that square watermelons were impossible before even thinking about the question. Things that you have been doing a certain way your entire life have taken on the aura of the round watermelon and you likely don’t even take the time to consider if there is another way to do it. Breaking yourself from assuming this way can greatly improve your overall life as you are constantly looking for new and better ways to do things.

2.) Question Habits: The best way to tackle these assumptions is to question your habits. If you can make an effort to question the way you do things on a consistent basis, you will find that you can continually improve the way that you live your life. Forming habits when they have been well thought out is usually a positive thing, but most of us have adopted our habits from various people and places without even thinking about them.

3.) Be Creative: When faced with a problem, be creative in looking for a solution. This often requires thinking outside the box. Most people who viewed this question likely thought they were being asked how they could genetically alter water melons to grow square which would be a much more difficult process to accomplish. By looking at the question from an alternative perspective, however, the solution was quite simple. Being creative and looking at things in different ways in all portions of your live will help you find solutions to many problems where others can’t see them.

4.) Look for a Better Way: The square watermelon question was simply seeking a better and more convenient way to do something. The stores had flagged a problem they were having and asked if a solution was possible. It’s impossible to find a better way if you are never asking the question in the first place . Always ask if there is a better way of doing the things that you do and constantly write down the things you wish you could do (but currently can’t) since these are usually hints about steps you need to change. Get into the habit of asking yourself, “Is there a better way I could be doing this?” and you will find there often is.

5.) Impossibilities Often Aren’t: If you begin with the notion that something is impossible, then it obviously will be for you. If, on the other hand, you decide to see if something is possible or not, you will find out through trial and error.

Sri Chinmoy on "What has life taught me?"

Posted on Jul 8th, 2008 by Mila : love Mila
Sri_chinmoy

What has life taught me? Life has taught me how to exclude and include-how to exclude unreality and how to include reality. When I feel that I am of God and for God, I become the fulfilling reality. When I feel that I am of myself and for myself, I become the self deceiving unreality.

Reality unveils, reveals and fulfils. Unreality veils, conceals and kills. Reality expands and transcends. Unreality cries and dies.

What has life taught me? Life has taught me conscience, common sense and God-sense. My heart utilises conscience; therefore, my heart is pure and brave. My mind utilises common sense: therefore, my mind is clear and direct. My soul utilises God sense; therefore, my soul is divine and perfect.

Life has taught me how to live and learn, how to learn and live, how to live and live, how to learn and learn. When I live and learn, I try to jump up onto the topmost bough of the tree instead of climbing up right from the foot. When I learn and live, I do the first thing first-I walk and then I run. When I live and live without first learning the inner lesson and discovering the real essence of my life, I deliberately deceive the divine within me and the divine in others. When I learn and learn, I constantly expand my earth bound consciousness and transcend my earth bound reality.

Life has taught me how to learn, unlearn and relearn. I learn. I learn the song of divine duty. By performing the duty divine, I know that I fulfil the divine within me, the Supreme within me. I learn the song of the childlike heart, for I know that if I have a childlike heart, I will always have the eagerness and inner urge to fulfil the divine by learning and discovering the Reality itself.

Each time I learn something, I march forward toward my destined Goal, my transcendental Goal. When I learn that my life is God Light, then during my soulful prayer and meditation I feel God the Infinite Peace, God the Eternal Light, God the Immortal Life claim me in the inmost recesses of my heart as His very own. At that time, I claim God's Infinity as my length, God's Eternity as my height and God's Immortality as my depth- the depth of my silent being. At that time I consciously become one, inseparably, eternally one, with the Inner Pilot, the Absolute Supreme.

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 10, 2008:

Thinking too much. Analyzing, figuring out how to connect instead of just doing it. Perhaps, not enough love of oneself, of others, of us so there's hesitation or risk aversion or whatnot.

And to add (inspired by Michael's response to this blog), it should really be easy to connect when we really believe that we are all already connected as ONE. Every you is me.

What would have to change for there to be no war?

Posted on Jul 13th, 2008 by Mila : love Mila
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 13, 2008:

This reminds me of John Lenon's song "Imagine".  But even it there's no country or no religion, I think there would still be war.  Each one still needs to awaken from within for there to be no war. Anyhow I think the song has a good answer to this QaR:

IMAGINE

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no country
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
.

What do you want from our leaders?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 12, 2008:

For me the true leaders that I look up to are those with a genuine commitment to follow their passion to make the world a better place.  All I would want from them is to go forward, not lose their focus and remain steadfast in the midst of growing challenges. Most of the leaders of so called 'powerful or economically rich nations' don't fall in this category.  And I have blogged earlier about a group called The Elders who are providing guidance, inspiration and support to such true leaders. I believe such true leaders have to grow in numbers and in quality and I think they need our support.  And everyone with the potential for such leadership has to come forward and make a difference.

Do you believe in the evolution of human consciousness?

Posted on Jul 18th, 2008 by Mila : love Mila
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 18, 2008:

If I believe otherwise, the vision looks bleak and hopeless, so why not believe in the brightest and most hopeful vision that my inner wisdom guides me into.  Evidences of this evolution happening is my own evolution, yours and others.  I can feel it in all of nature in all my senses including my sixth.  Disasters and wars, though on the surface seem destructive, happen for some divine reasons. Even in what I and we all are doing, or even reading (or shall I write 'led into reading') not just here in gaia but elsewhere, whether spiritual or the not so spiritual, I sense a divine hand behind it all.  EKhart Tole's books The Power of Now and A New Earth also point to such an evolution already happening.  This week I remember the feature article in The Globalist "Common Wealth" by Jeffrey D. Sachs, 'which argues that the 21st century will be marked by a shift in acting from national interests to acting in global interests.'  Then there is Mark's invitation to the Temple of the Sacred Sound  and Positive Music Association (thanks to Bryan Flourney for this).   And so many more....

Getting caught up in day-to-day worldly affairs could sometimes make one set aside her/his real self.  At such moments, one turns the volume of one's own personal filters - beliefs, convictions, opinions, attachments  - so high, drowning out one's inner voice.

At this moment, I am feeling annoyed over a friend's failure to phone me since three weeks.  I am hearing my ego self speaking "Why do I always have to be the one to call her?"  But in the next moment I realise through my inner voice "Just go and call her!"

The greatest wisdom I have learned from animals in general is how connected they are to nature, and that means to themselves and to each other.

When I first came to Kathmandu, my first job was with the Tiger Tops group of companies which operated adventure tourism businesses, such as jungle lodges and tented camps, a mountain trekking company, a travel agency, and a mountain tented camp.  I learned from animal experts that wild animals don't attack when not provoked.  Tourists were advised that if ever they come face to face with a tiger, a rhino or a bear in the wild, they should keep still and not look at the animal's eyes.  But since the natural instinct is to scream and run, this reaction startles the animals and make them feel threatened and attack in defense.

And from our pet dog and fishes, as some have already mentioned, I have learned how they love unconditionally and that if you spend time talking to them, they'll talk back and shower you with joyful surprises.

Butterflies

I have this fascination with butterflies (and flowers).  I identify with their light-heartedness and gentle fluttering spirit, their colorfulness and closeness to nature, their positive energies. I have learned from butterflies how to stay open to and embrace change, just to flow with it naturally, without anxiety, without judgment.

The butterfly counts not months, but moments, and yet has time enough.

Rabindranath Tagore

"Just living is not enough," said the butterfly.
"One must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower."

Hans Christian Anderson

I only ask to be free. The butterflies are free.

Charles Dickens

To make a wish come true,
whisper it to a Butterfly.
Upon these wings it will be taken to
heaven and granted,
for they are the messengers of the Great Spirit.

Native American Legend

May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun
And find your shoulder to light on,
To bring you luck, happiness and riches
Today, tomorrow and beyond.

Irish Blessing

Ducks

According to my Mom, when she conceived me she developed a fondness for black ducklings.  By coincidence I have a birthmark on my back which seemed to jive with her story.  Also I am a water person - I love to swim, snorkle, play with water or play in the rain, ride a boat, etc.  I do also like ducks and other water birds and animals.

Horses

I was born in the year of the Chinese horse.  My home page has a passage about this which I won't repeat here.

I identify with the horse's intelligence and graceful charm, its adventurous free spirit.  The first time I rode on a horse was during a trip to Kyrgyzstan.  Our government hosts took us to a wilderness park, just an hour away from the capital Bishkek.  Not many of our delegation dared to ride the horses, except 4 men and two women, an American and myself.  The American was used to riding horses while for me it was my first time.  So I didn't really have the courage to ride the horse in speed.  I just sat on the saddle while it trotted just for about 7 minutes.  But it was such an unforgettable experience.  The horse turned out quite friendly.  I have to find the photo and scan it and put it in my gallery later.

When were you last suprised by joy?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 22, 2008:

I have simple joys and my moments are filled with them.  Right now the rain just stopped and I am watching and hearing the chirping birds returning to roost in the trees and everywhere. I am feeling the crisp fresh air tingling on my skin, putting a smile on my lips and eyes.  Am smelling a hot cup of lemongrass tea and just now sipping it as I respond joyfully to this wonderful QaR of the day.  Thanking you Siona, as I open up to my next joyful surprises!

Just read your question. Am now breathing in and out, listening to my inner wisdom and writing these words. Nothing in my mind.  Am just still, going with the flow right now.

Heavy load

Read this in yesterday's papers and thought of sharing:

Leaving behind the burden

Take a potato and write on it a name of a person who has fallen from grace with you.  Do this for everyone who has raised your ire and never received your forgiveness.  When you’re finished, gather all your potatoes together and place them in a sack.  Keep this sack next to you at all times.  Take it to work.  Take it to lunch.  Take it everywhere you go. And always have it with you at home.

How long would it take for you to grow tired of carrying this burden around? How long would it take your potatoes to sprout into other things, fester and smell? Wouldn’t it be nice to be free from the weight, stench, and constant reminder of hurt, disappointment, hearthache, and anger?

By hanging on to things that are unpleasant, we create more anguish for ourselves.  When you forgive someone, you free yourself from an oppressive load of negativity.  Forgiveness allows you to create peace in your life.

GO TOWARDS THE LIGHT!

GO TOWARDS THE LIGHT!
Don't be afraid. Its not what you think.

HILLYBILLY BIRTH

Deep in the back woods, of Letcher County Kentucky a hillbilly's wife went into labor in the middle of the night, and the doctor was called out to assist in the delivery. Since there was no electricity, the doctor handed the father-to-be a lantern and said, "Here. You hold this high so I can see what I am doing!."

Soon, a baby boy was brought into the world. "Whoa there," said the doctor, "don't be in such a rush to put that lantern down I think there's another one coming."

Sure enough, within minutes he had delivered a baby girl. "Hold that lantern up, don't set it down there's another one!" Said the doctor. Within a few minutes he had delivered a third baby. "No, don't be in a hurry to put down that lantern, it seems there's yet another one coming!" cried the doctor.

The redneck scratched his head in bewilderment, and asked the doctor, "You reckon it might be the light that's attractin' 'em?"

Cheers everyone!
