Is Obama an enlightened being?
Is Obama an enlightened being?
Spiritual wise ones say: This sure ain't no ordinary politician. You buying it?Source: sfgate.com Friday, June 6, 2008

I find I'm having this discussion, this weird little debate, more and more, with colleagues, with readers, with liberals and moderates and miserable, deeply depressed Republicans and spiritually amped persons of all shapes and stripes and I'm having it in particular with those who seem confused, angry, unsure, thoroughly nonplussed, as they all ask me the same thing: What the hell's the big deal about Obama?
I, of course, have an answer. Sort of.
Warning: If you are a rigid pragmatist/literalist, itchingly evangelical, a scowler, a doubter, a burned-out former '60s radical with no hope left, or are otherwise unable or unwilling to parse alternative New Age speak, click away right now, because you ain't gonna like this one little bit.
Ready? It goes likes this:
Barack Obama isn't really one of us. Not in the normal way, anyway.
This is what I find myself offering up more and more in response to the whiners and the frowners and to those with broken or sadly dysfunctional karmic antennae - or no antennae at all - to all those who just don't understand and maybe even actively recoil against all this chatter about Obama's aura and feel and MLK/JFK-like vibe.
To them I say, all right, you want to know what it is? The appeal, the pull, the ethereal and magical thing that seems to enthrall millions of people from all over the world, that keeps opening up and firing into new channels of the culture normally completely unaffected by politics?
No, it's not merely his youthful vigor, or handsomeness, or even inspiring rhetoric. It is not fresh ideas or cool charisma or the fact that a black president will be historic and revolutionary in about a thousand different ways. It is something more. Even Bill Clinton, with all his effortless, winking charm, didn't have what Obama has, which is a sort of powerful luminosity, a unique high-vibration integrity.
Dismiss it all you like, but I've heard from far too many enormously smart, wise, spiritually attuned people who've been intuitively blown away by Obama's presence - not speeches, not policies, but sheer presence - to say it's just a clever marketing ploy, a slick gambit carefully orchestrated by hotshot campaign organizers who, once Obama gets into office, will suddenly turn from perky optimists to vile soul-sucking lobbyist whores, with Obama as their suddenly evil, cackling overlord.
Here's where it gets gooey. Many spiritually advanced people I know (not coweringly religious, mind you, but deeply spiritual) identify Obama as a Lightworker, that rare kind of attuned being who has the ability to lead us not merely to new foreign policies or health care plans or whatnot, but who can actually help usher in a new way of being on the planet, of relating and connecting and engaging with this bizarre earthly experiment. These kinds of people actually help us evolve. They are philosophers and peacemakers of a very high order, and they speak not just to reason or emotion, but to the soul.
The unusual thing is, true Lightworkers almost never appear on such a brutal, spiritually demeaning stage as national politics. This is why Obama is so rare. And this why he is so often compared to Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., to those leaders in our culture whose stirring vibrations still resonate throughout our short history.
Are you rolling your eyes and scoffing? Fine by me. But you gotta wonder, why has, say, the JFK legacy lasted so long, is so vital to our national identity? Yes, the assassination canonized his legend. The Kennedy family is our version of royalty. But there's something more. Those attuned to energies beyond the literal meanings of things, these people say JFK wasn't assassinated for any typical reason you can name. It's because he was just this kind of high-vibration being, a peacemaker, at odds with the war machine, the CIA, the dark side. And it killed him.
Now, Obama. The next step. Another try. And perhaps, as Bush laid waste to the land and embarrassed the country and pummeled our national spirit into disenchanted pulp and yet ironically, in so doing has helped set the stage for an even larger and more fascinating evolutionary burp, we are finally truly ready for another Lightworker to step up.
Let me be completely clear: I'm not arguing some sort of utopian revolution, a big global group hug with Obama as some sort of happy hippie camp counselor. I'm not saying the man's going to swoop in like a superhero messiah and stop all wars and make the flowers grow and birds sing and solve world hunger and bring puppies to schoolchildren.
Please. I'm also certainly not saying he's perfect, that his presidency will be free of compromise, or slimy insiders, or great heaps of politics-as-usual. While Obama's certainly an entire universe away from George W. Bush in terms of quality, integrity, intelligence and overall inspirational energy, well, so is your dog. Hell, it isn't hard to stand far above and beyond the worst president in American history.
But there simply is no denying that extra kick. As one reader put it to me, in a way, it's not even about Obama, per se. There's a vast amount of positive energy swirling about that's been held back by the armies of BushCo darkness, and this energy has now found a conduit, a lightning rod, is now effortlessly self-organizing around Obama's candidacy. People and emotions and ideas of high and positive vibration are automatically drawn to him. It's exactly like how Bush was a magnet for the low vibrational energies of fear and war and oppression and aggression, but, you know, completely reversed. And different. And far, far better.
Don't buy any of it? Think that's all a bunch of tofu-sucking New Agey bulls-- and Obama is really a dangerously elitist political salesman whose inexperience will lead us further into darkness because, when you're talking national politics, nothing, really, ever changes? I understand. I get it. I often believe it myself.
Not this time.

Help

I hope so -
I loved this Mila…exactly my feelings.
Don't you feel it so, NP?
Helen, I felt I was led into this article from nowhere really and after reading it with enthusiasm, just felt I had to share it. Delighted to see you around! Hugs!
Hello my ONEderFULL friends.
I hope that you don't find this post off the topic. I have read the blog, but based on the question surrounding the name of the blog, I believe that this answer is appropriate.
YES!!!
We are all enlightened, all that we need to do is realize this simple truth and then let that, which we already are (IN-light), shine through us and out into the world.
Now, with that said, I believe that Obama is a perfect fit for the job that we need in that position right now. I feel as if the world is changing. And the people are starting to wake up and learning to keep their own power ( a felling of self worth ) and deciding to share it with the world. Rather than give it away for others to use as they please. This is what the shift is all about, and Obama is helping to change things on a Governmental level; while all of us are changing on a individual level. So the way that I see it, Obama is willing to do whatever the people say needs to be do to correct the problems that we are being faced with in this nation, and in the world at large. So the clear we gat about ourselves the more effective Obama's work will become . To me he is just a spokesperson for the people. If we speak our voice, as a collective, he will do his best to grant our wishes. This what a true leader does - works for the greast good of all of mankind - which is what I believe Obama is.
Much LOVE for you all ♥ ♥ ♥
Thanks for daring to comment and share your insights, N-N!
Though I would support your position that we all have that in-light, I don't know about we all are enlightened. Maybe I'm still evolving toward that!
Your comments prodded me to ask another question, does it take an enlighted one to know another?
In wondering mode~ M
all points lead to enlightenment eventually
I don't know a lot but that is true — the eyes
of the beholder see it as so…
I like how you put it - all leads to enlightenment eventually! I suppose so!
Thanks for popping over, NP! Hugs and light!
Thank you Mila for sharing this… I am not sure if I read it before or I knew it to be true all along…
The easiest way that I can answer this, from a human perspective, is to give you this example…I was hanging out in the chat room of a show on blogtalkradio, where most of the people were talking about love being all there is and spreading this joy and cheer through their words and attitudes, when someone happened upon us who started asking questions like, “Are you talking about sexually love?” “does this love your talking about involve drugs?” Questions of this kind. And after trying to explain to this person that the love we were talking about goes beyond all of these - it is the love that prevades everything - she did not like this answer and decided that we were all hippies; to which I replied, “How would you know? Are you a hippie?” she did not reply to my question and left the room.
I guess what I am trying to say by this story is that, yes it does take an enlightened being to know an enlightened being, but not in the same way that I mentioned above. The difference in this is the fact that you can be enlightened, which you are, always have been and forever will be, but at the same time not be aware of this fact. So in this context, you can “think” that you are not that which you are, and, therefore, experience that which you are not. But, the truth remains the same, you are already enlightened! So in conclusion, all it takes is the awareness of being enlightened. Once this is realized, one then realizes that he/she is one with everything, which means whatever I am, you are, and therefore realizes the enlightenment that prevades everything.
Enlightenment is not a destination but, rather, a realization. And all that you have to do to realize that which you already are, is to connect with your heart and soul and you will once again remember the true beauty of that which you are - LOVE.
Much LOVE ♥ ♥ ♥
Point one: Yeh B.O. is a lightworker colleague o' mine. He is just playing his role for the era and I'm thankful he's doing it so graciously. God would be proud ;)
Point two: Everyone has the potential to act in the light. Sometimes they need to be guided there, though. I haven't had the experience of people rejecting the opportunity to step up and be their best self when they felt it was a welcoming environment. My Personal Excellence courses all concluded with persons recognising they are divine, they are children of God and that they might just be able to make a difference in their space. This tells me we can all be 'enlightened' in that sense but this moment might not be the incident in time to achieve this. The universe decides this order, in my opinion.
Those people who run away from Truth are still themselves on the pathway and learning certain lessons that will bring them to there anyway; maybe the message that release and reduced control [or attempts at it], are the best way to go…
These are my thoughts on this.
Enjoyed this Mila. [Pretty much anything on Obama interests me lol] Great great posting.
Love, Sherrilene
Gosh, I hope so Mila. Every day this man blows me away, in the way he models inclusiveness and humility, compassion and, OK, let's say it–love. I so hope I'm not just seeing what I want to see. I can't wait until January 20, 2009.
I don't mean to be the guy that goes against the grain here but unfortunately I'm afraid it may be my role… I really like some of the plans that Obama has, especially some of his social programs. I like the fact that he's making sense of a lot of what's happened and actually knows a little bit about economics. However many of my friends agree, and i do too that his foreign policy is a little… well… bad? Correct me if I'm wrong because I like to know i'm hearing the facts right or wrong but wanting to put the heat on pakistan and afganistan isn't really a solution to Iraq nor is it helping us in a practical way. We're starting to endorse anything anti-muslim it seems. when Israel sends over a couple f-16's, that we gave them, to run some bombing practice over their neighbors soil and then when they react with a little bit of boosting their defense I call it reasonable. But when the US says that those nations are acting like terrorists for arming themselves and we rally behind it… i mean come on… He says we need to focus on afghanistan to take out al qaeda and the taliban for justice or whatever you'd like to call it, but in the end, is this not revenge? I have never seen a video tape with Osama Bin laden on it other than the one saying that he did not plan 911 but supported whoever did. I just don't see why we are still trying to, lets face it, kill people that hurt America.
I apologize again for being the thorn in your sides (this is more a general reply than to any particular post) but his foreign policy isn't peaceful. We should talk with the middle east, nothing more, period.
^_^ though perhaps this is simply my young naive gullable mind spouting nonsense.
I can't wait for those social programs though! it's about time we focus on the people a little =)
Namaste,
Carl
Am enthralled and enriched with all the beautiful responses arising!
N-N, thank you for further expounding on your thoughts about enlightenment being a realization and awareness, not a destination. It rings a gong in my heart.
Sherri, you've put it in a wonderful perspective, that we are all divine and have that potential in us to be enlightened and that it's not really our decision but that a greater divine force is behind it. But I was just looking at another angle that since we have that divine force in us as well, then we can also say that our inner voices, if we are listening, do lead us into enlightenment or our awareness of it. And yes, reiterating what others have pointed to, eventually we are all evolving into such an awareness, each one in his/her own time.
Thank you both for gracing my space! Deep bows!
I couldn't agree with you more.It just really is hard to listen to people predict doomsday with him in charge.I don't believe that in the least.I guess I just need to read more uplifting blogs like yours.Thank you for this.
I like the angle you're taking Mila. And I think that Spirit does 'want' us to be in that place. It 'wants' us to listen; to help us to travel on the journey. The 'gift' of free will has resulted, though, in our sliding off track and listening to our minds moreso than our gut in some cases. That experiment may be just getting hauled in right now since destruction has been the result for some time as a consequence, and the long term existence and growth of Earth and the universe at large is so important… bigger than our mental ramblings!
Thanks for opening your blog to armchair spiritual pholosiphists! lol Peace and love, Sherri
Jeff, those same feelings struck me as I was reading through it! Thanks for passing by! Hugs!
Nimrod, it's good to see what you want to see and would have no doubts whatsoever! Great to read from you!
Carl, we all have our roles to play and to accept and do what we are called to is wonderful! Yes, I see wisdom in his social policies. I wouldn't as yet make conclusions on foreign policy (sounds status quo so far) which I feel is quite a tough challenge as he has to balance what prevails with the shifts that wisdom point to. There is nothing like nonsense for me! Thank you for popping over and daring to comment and connect! Blessings!
You put it quite well, Poppi! Indeed, it's hard to predict doomsday with Obama in charge! Deep bows!
I got below comment in my messages page for new member Siddhartha and he agreed that I put it in here.

Obama is showing all the signs of a highly developed soul. I sense he is is aware of his role and has the personal strength, integrity and capacity to hold the possibility that has opened up in the collective consciousness.
He does not need to be enlightened to play his role. We, all of us, are in a process that is taking us to a more enlightened state of consciousness, one that recognizes we are all all part of a one, interconnected, interdependent whole. There is no longer room for the selfishness, greed, arrogance and deception that has gotten us to this point.
The bubble has burst in the collective delusion and now what was hidden is being revealed. This is always the sign that Spirit is rising to the fore. This is the nature of enlightenment,, to wake us up to our delusion.
It is the pressures in the collective consciousness that have led us to this moment and have created the response we are seeing to Obama. He is the empty vessel that can take us to the next step in humanity's evolution. A new consciousness is coming. Just watch.
All blessings,
Siddhartha
He is simply the right man in this moment of history for this role. No need to be enightened.
This word is so contrioversial right now. Even Andrew Cohen and his community relabeled their magazine from WHAT IS ENLIGTENMENT? to ENLIGTENNEXT.
We need tens of thousands of innovators, leaders, pioneers etc with the same committement as Barack. AND his devoted teams and collaborators.

The current issue and all the previous ones are full of references to the themes of change, collective inteligence and the message of hope for the world.
Loved that article, Mila! Thank you for sharing! Here is a painting that complements it well…

I feel as though I've opened up the Obama box (not at all like Pandorra's) and out came such beautiful and empowering effervescence emanating from all your spirits!
Welcome back here, Sherri! Yes, you could call us that 'armchair pholosiphists' (lauhing out loud with you!) engaging in our 'mental ramblings'.
And yet another word the birth of which I've been notified by Albert - enlightennext! Gee whiz, what could be next? Kosmosjournal sounds interesting so I'll be getting myself absorbed there every once in a while. In fact a few glimpses into the pages have led me to new economics stuff (which I'll tackle in another relevant space in a while). Thanks for passing by, dear friend!
JD, glad to have you as another new friend coming by way of the Obama channel! Thank you for the introduction to artist Alex Grey through his and wife Allyson's blog in the Obama Orb, and for making your presence felt here.
Richard, let me go there now. Thank you for your visit. Really appreciated!
Hugs and blessings to all!
I haven't read all comments, but just reading the question my answer is
No, Obama is not an enlightened being, and that is not a putdown. Obama is THE catalyst to make a lot of people enlightened and now it is up to us to help him enlightened people more. Obama is like a bodhisattva who puts people first to bring change and welfare and not worried about his own 'enlightenment'. Bodhisattvas vow like Quan Yin vow to be the last to be enlightened until everybody is enlightened. Obama is like that.
Will come back again later,
Samme
Just had a thought?
Do we assume that a lightworker is enlightened?
In the original article, it seems like the author is certain Obama is a lightworker, conscious of his ability and his mission at this time.
But does enlightened mean anything more than that? Is 'Truth' that knowledge I mentioned there? That you know your purpose and are willing to lean on Spirit to proceed with it?
Hi, this may seem like a minor point, but I'm going to a lot of effort to make the following correction wherever on the Web I can:
Obama is not “black” - he is mixed-race! This is NOT actually a minor point, it is a major point. Mixed-race people, like myself, are the future of the planet and the antidote to racism because we are NEITHER and BOTH and as such inherently lack innate prejudices and us/them thinking - because we're never quite sure if we are us or them ourselves!
It blows me away that so many people miss this crucial fact and keep referring to Obama as a “black man” just because he has brown skin. It's another form of racism actually to label a person racially because of their appearance, even though their ethnic background is more complex. Another mixed-race friend of mine is Chinese and Black (American) but looks actually like a mix of Chinese and Caucasian, however she really identifies with the Black side of her family and the black experience in America. It is one of the bones of contention that she constantly has to face - people assuming she is one thing when she is another.
I think a lot of so-called African Americans make the mistake of thinking Obama is “one of them” because he has brown skin, when actually his background has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the legacy of descent from slaves that is the core of the resentment and hard-done-by attitude that is sadly endemic to so much black American culture. His father was African in the sense of being born and raised there - not as in the descendant of Africans dragged to America in a slave ship - and the Caucasian side of Obama's family, that raised him, gave him a very international upbringing and access to the finest schools. His experience is worlds away from the average “African-American” guy from South Central LA or the Bronx. As such he is uniquely poised to be objective on issues that are often clouded by racially biased perspectives, whether from the “black” or “white” side of the fence.
On another note however - I hope that Obama can buck the system but I truly doubt it. To get to be president requires an enormous machinery that is bought and paid for by the establishment and insiders, one way or another, and there is no reason to think it's any different this time. You cannot reasonably compare MLK to Obama or any other elected official because Dr King was a man whose enormous influence was purely the result of a grass roots wave of support. He did not spend $300 million in order to achieve his status - it was derived from his timeliness, his shamanic-level oratory powers and his lifetime of dedication to spiritual matters and acute sense of justice. It's ridiculous to compare the two!
RIDICULOUS!
As for JFK, had he not been assassinated, perhaps he would have introduced the debt-free currency that some say was his plan and thereby really pissed off the people that put him in power. This would have been very unusual and a very risky move that would have gotten him killed - some say this is the real reason he was indeed killed before he could pull it off. We will probably never know.
Obama has appointed the head of the NY Fed as Treasury Secretary and is looking at the same ole same ole in terms of the absurd “drug war” by picking Ramstad, while he's got Brzezinski for foreign policy.
Does any of this sound like enlightenment or sweeping change to you?
I voted for him because I like his image and am sick of old white dudes in the oval office, not because I truly believe anything radically beautiful is about to happen in world politics as a result of his election. Having been engaged in politics for a long time, I have long been disheartened by the idiotic refusal of most people to be aware of what is happening politically - as if it didn't affect them somehow simply because they chose not to read newspapers. so the other thing I'm glad about is that this election has dissolved a lot of apathy.
But if you don't think Obama is a “made man” then you misunderstand politics.
But I'm not so bitter I don't hope to be proved wrong.
A lot of people run away from the race issue and say it's not the point.
In actual fact, it is the most significant thing about his election - a brown person in the highest executive office means hope for millions of brown people around the world - even though it may be the result of a cynical political game…..
Glad you could male it here, Samme! Thank you for sharing your perspective and giving Obama yet some other titles - a catalyst (makes good sense to me), something like a bodhisattva (perhaps). Look forward to your return as you wrote. Blessings!
The link from Richard puts Obama as a supular (super popular) having achieved such status with a score of 9.5 in the supular scale.
Sherri, I can feel how absorbed you had been, like myself, with this question. And I ponder on your further questions.
Hello, Dianarosa! Thanks for dropping by to share your thoughts and insights. Yes, this election did seem to have dissolved a lot of apathy about US politics, a move forward!
Thank you for all the outpourings from all of you! Enlightening stuff!
